Alibaba Joins the Chatbot Race with Its Own ChatGPT-Style Tool

Alibaba has announced that it is developing its own AI-powered chatbot that will compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The Chinese tech giant has revealed that it is testing the technology internally, but did not disclose when the chatbot will be launched or what it will be called. Alibaba stated that large language models and generative AI have been a focus of its research arm, DAMO, since its formation in 2017. The spokesperson for the company explained that they are investing in turning innovative technology into value-added applications for their customers and end-users.

ChatGPT is built on large language models trained on vast amounts of data online to generate responses to user prompts. This tool has the potential to spread misinformation, according to experts, as it generates compelling responses that may not be entirely accurate. Alibaba joins Google and Chinese search engine Baidu in launching their own version of the tool.

Google’s chatbot, Bard, will be available to the public in the coming weeks, while Baidu’s ERNIE Bot is set to launch in March. However, Bard had an embarrassing setback this week when it produced an incorrect response during a public demonstration, causing Alphabet’s shares to fall by nearly 8% on Wednesday.

Microsoft has also announced that it is investing billions of dollars in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. In addition, Microsoft plans to update Bing’s search engine to answer questions and produce content in response to user prompts using AI technology.

Alibaba’s entrance into the chatbot market will likely intensify competition among tech giants for control of this growing industry. It remains to be seen how successful Alibaba’s chatbot will be in this crowded market, but the company’s substantial resources and expertise in AI could give it a significant advantage.
