Linus Tech Tips: Shocking Suspension of a Popular YouTube Channel
Linus Tech Tips, a famous technology related YouTube channel, was hacked yesterday. Its 15 million subscribers were treated to a scam involving cryptocurrencies and Elon Musk.
The YouTube channel suddenly changed, with subscribers noticing old videos, or videos that were supposed to be private, showing up in their subscriptions, before the channel was renamed to “LinusTechTipsTemp” and then “Tesla” and started streaming videos in direct about Elon Musk and Bitcoin. These videos often trick users into sending cryptocurrencies, or revealing their digital wallet details.
In light of the situation, YouTube has suspended the Linus Tech Tips channel, removing the cryptocurrency scams and content from the channel.
Linus Sebastian, the manager of Linus Tech Tips, reacted to the hack:
Thank you all for your concerns. We are still in recovery mode and working with YouTube to get everything back. We hope to have a video (or at least details during the WAN Show) to share with you all as soon as possible, but we want to make sure the details are correct as smaller channels can rely on our expertise to help them strengthen their own security guards.
It turns out that the hack also affected Techquickie and TechLinked, two YouTube channels owned by the Linus Media Group. They, too, are suspended… at least for now.
This isn’t the only notable hack. Music artists like Lil Nas X, Drake and Taylor Swift have fallen victim to a similar hack. In 2021, Google explained that violations of this type originated from phishing attacks. It’s unclear exactly what happened in the Linus Tech Tips case, but the damage has already been done, and given the spread of these attacks, it’s surprising that YouTube doesn’t provide more tools to protect its users and content creators.
