Microsoft Sells Over 21 Million Xbox Series X | S Consoles: New Sales Figures Revealed

As of June 30, 2023, Microsoft has sold more than 21 million units of the Xbox Series X | S consoles since their release in November 2020. While Microsoft has not been forthcoming with specific sales figures in recent years, this information was revealed during an ID@Xbox Developer Accelerator Program presentation at the BIG Festival in Brazil. The disclosure indicates that the combined sales of the Xbox Series X and Series S have reached 21 million units, and when including Xbox One console sales, the total rises to over 71 million units.

In comparison, Sony announced in its recent financial report that it has sold over 38.4 million PlayStation 5 units since its launch in November 2020. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch, which was released earlier in March 2017, has sold more than 125 million units as of last March.

A notable detail from the Microsoft presentation is that 48% of sales for the more affordable Xbox Series S console came from new customers to the Xbox platform. This suggests that Microsoft’s strategy of offering a lower-priced option has been successful in attracting new users, as it allows them to enter the Xbox ecosystem at a more accessible price point while still enjoying the same games available on the higher-end Xbox Series X console.
