Apple’s Evolution of Notes App: From iOS 16 to iOS 17
In the year 2022, Apple introduced several improvements through iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, which included features like the capability to create quick notes on your iPhone and secure notes using either a passcode or biometric authentication. Then, in 2023, the Notes app received additional enhancements with the release of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. These additions encompassed the ability to annotate scanned documents and the convenience of adding hyperlinks within your notes.
Before you begin, ensure that your iPhone or iPad is running the most recent operating system (OS) version. To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings on your device.
- Tap General.
- Select Software Update.
- You’ll either see a message indicating that your OS is up to date or be prompted to download the latest update if available.
Now, let’s explore 17 features and functionalities of the Notes app:
- Quick Note Creation: Save time by initiating a note from the Control Center or within specific apps. Swipe down from the top right corner to access the Control Center and tap the Quick Note icon. Alternatively, create Quick Notes from apps like Safari. These notes are automatically saved in the Notes app.
- Secure Notes: Protect your notes using a custom password, your device’s passcode, or biometric authentication (Touch ID or Face ID) if your device supports it. Locked notes can only be accessed after authentication.
- Gallery View: Switch from the default List view to Gallery view to see your notes as thumbnail images with titles and previews. This feature makes it easier to identify and access notes.
- View Attachments: Quickly access all photos and attachments associated with your notes by selecting the “View Attachments” option in the ellipsis menu.
- Folder and Note Management: Organize your folders and notes effortlessly. Drag and drop notes to rearrange them or convert a folder into a subfolder. You can also access various commands for both folders and individual notes, such as scanning, pinning, locking, and more.
- Custom Sorting: Customize the sorting order of notes within a folder. You can sort by date edited, date created, title, and choose ascending or descending order.
- Sharing Notes and Folders: Share your notes and folders with others, allowing them to view or edit. You can create a new folder specifically for sharing and control access permissions.
- Tagging Notes: Use hashtags to tag your notes for better organization. Tags can be added anywhere in the text or title and allow for easy categorization.
- Smart Folders: Create dynamic smart folders based on tags and other criteria. These folders automatically include notes with specific tags.
- Send Notes to Other Apps: Share notes with other apps like Google Drive or Dropbox by selecting the “Share Note” option. This is useful for storing notes as separate text files.
- Create Checklists: Turn your notes into to-do lists by adding checkboxes. You can create sub-items, mark items as completed, and choose whether completed items move to the bottom.
- Text Formatting: Customize text styles, apply bold or other attributes, and create bulleted or numbered lists using the text formatting options.
- Scan Documents and Photos: Incorporate scanned documents or images into your notes using the built-in scanning feature.
- Mark Up Scanned Items: iOS/iPadOS 17 and higher allow you to annotate scanned PDFs and images. Choose from various drawing tools and colors.
- Add Links in Notes: Insert links to webpages or other notes within your notes. Simply select the text, choose “Add Link,” and enter the URL or note name.
- Apple Pencil Integration: If you have an Apple Pencil and an iPad running iPadOS 14 or higher, you can use the Scribble feature to convert your handwritten notes into editable text.
These features make the Notes app a versatile tool for note-taking, organization, and collaboration on iOS and iPadOS devices.
