PlayStation Users facing Access Loss for Select Purchases by Year End
Sony is in fact preparing to remove Discovery series like Mythbusters or Naked and Afraid from its networks, even for those who have already purchased that content. All this because of a merger between Warner Bros and Discovery, which impacts Sony’s (and its customers’) rights:
“Given our licensing agreements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch previously purchased Discovery content and that content will be removed from your libraries,” reads an email from Sony sent to users.
In that same email we found a link (this one) showing all PlayStation content that is affected. Some people discover in a rather brutal way the terms and conditions that few read before signing… which basically states that no one owns the online content. This is a rental for an indefinite period at the discretion of the companies. And the trend will be confirmed. We see from Microsoft and Sony’s policies that disk drives are gradually disappearing from machines, thus eliminating the option of providing hardware versions.
Fortunately, third parties still offer and even so, not all series exist in physical versions.
