Google TV Unveils New Call Integration Feature for Enhanced Connectivity

Google TV is getting a new feature that allows certain apps to send calls to your TV. The feature is now available on select Chromecast devices with Google TV 4K, and is expected to roll out to all compatible devices over the next few weeks.
To use this feature, users need to enable call notifications in Google TV settings. To do this, they need to open the Settings menu, tap “Accounts and access”, then “Accounts” and, finally, “Call notifications”.
Once activated, call notifications will appear on your TV screen when you receive a call via a compatible app. You can then answer or reject the call by tapping the notification.
Currently, applications compatible with the feature include Google Meet, Zoom and Google Duo. Google also stated that other applications should gain compatibility in the future.
How does the calling feature on Google TV work?
The resource works using the WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) protocol. This protocol allows applications to communicate with each other in real time. In the case of Google TV, the WebRTC protocol is used to send voice and video calls from an application to the TV, and then shows that call on the TV screen.
However, the resource currently has some limitations. For example, you can’t filter incoming calls based on device. This means you will receive all calls, even if they come from an application you are no longer using. Additionally, the feature is not yet fully operational. In some cases, call notifications do not appear on the TV screen, even if they are activated in the settings.
Google says the feature should roll out to all supported devices over the next few weeks.
