Apple Plans to Introduce Cameras and AI Features to Future Apple Watches

Apple is reportedly preparing to equip future Apple Watch models with cameras and AI-driven features, with a potential release date as early as 2027, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The tech giant is considering adding cameras to both its standard Series models and the high-end Ultra versions. For the Series models, the camera is expected to be embedded directly into the display, while the Ultra model may feature a side-mounted camera next to the side button.
These developments align with Apple’s broader strategy to enhance its wearable devices with AI capabilities. Gurman previously reported that Apple is also exploring the integration of micro cameras and AI features in its AirPods. These cameras would enable advanced visual AI capabilities similar to Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature, which debuted with the iPhone 16. This functionality allows users to receive AI-generated insights about their surroundings, such as identifying objects like flowers through the camera.
Gurman suggests that Apple’s long-term goal is to extend Visual Intelligence beyond the iPhone, embedding it deeply into future Apple devices, including wearables like the Apple Watch. However, the Visual Intelligence experience on the Apple Watch may differ significantly from its current implementation, as Apple is looking to shift the technology to its own AI models, reducing reliance on third-party providers such as OpenAI and Google.
Mixed Consumer Reception Toward AI Features
Despite Apple’s ambitions, consumer enthusiasm for AI features remains uncertain. A December survey by Sellcell.com revealed that 73% of iPhone users and 87% of Samsung users found the available AI capabilities to provide “little to no value,” reflecting widespread indifference across both ecosystems.
For those eager to experience Visual Intelligence without upgrading to an iPhone 16, Apple plans to extend the feature to the iPhone 15 Pro with the upcoming iOS 18.4 update, expected to roll out next month.
