Google Gemini Still Trailing ChatGPT, Court Documents Reveal

Recently disclosed court documents reveal that Google’s Gemini AI still lags behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT in terms of user engagement.
According to internal estimates from Google, Gemini reached 350 million monthly active users and around 35 million daily users as of March 2025. These figures were highlighted in materials submitted during a legal case and first reported by The Information.
By comparison, Google analysts estimate that ChatGPT boasts around 600 million monthly active users and 160 million daily users. While these numbers are not official—OpenAI has not released its own data—they provide insight into the ongoing competition between the two AI platforms.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously suggested that actual ChatGPT usage may be significantly higher. In an April 11 interview at TED, Altman referenced the platform’s earlier milestone of 500 million weekly active users. He also hinted that the user base had doubled in recent weeks, implying that ChatGPT may have reached one billion weekly users. Although he didn’t confirm the number explicitly, he responded casually when the interviewer offered to cut the remark from the recording, saying, “That’s okay. No problem. It’s growing very fast.”
Additional figures from the court proceedings also highlight how quickly Gemini has scaled. Back in October 2024, Google reported just 9 million daily active users for Gemini, compared to ChatGPT’s 90 million at the time.
One key takeaway is the disparity between daily and monthly usage. Despite having over half as many monthly users as ChatGPT, Gemini’s daily activity is less than a quarter that of its rival. This could indicate that Gemini users engage with the platform less frequently.
Much of Gemini’s recent growth may be attributed to its integration into popular Google services such as Docs, Sheets, Gmail, and more. These built-in AI features likely helped boost user numbers over the past six months.
