Apple Plans Vision Pro Upgrade With M4 Chip and Improved Design

Apple is gearing up to launch an updated version of its Vision Pro headset later this year, according to Bloomberg.

The first-generation Vision Pro, introduced at WWDC in 2023 and released in the U.S. early last year, runs on Apple’s M2 chip and hasn’t seen a hardware refresh since its debut. The upcoming model is expected to deliver notable enhancements in both performance and wearability.

A key upgrade in the new version will be the integration of Apple’s M4 processor, which will boost support for the company’s Apple Intelligence features. Apple is also reportedly testing configurations with neural engines featuring more than 16 cores—an increase over the 16-core design found in both the current M2 and M4 chips. The M4 chip already offers roughly 1.5 times the CPU speed of the M2, making it a significant leap forward.

Another major area of focus is the headset’s comfort. Apple is reportedly redesigning the head strap, which was one of the most common complaints with the original Vision Pro. Reviewers noted that the headset felt front-heavy and lacked a vertical support strap, leading to discomfort during extended use. Apple is now prototyping new strap designs aimed at improving balance and reducing strain on the neck.

In addition to the second-gen Vision Pro, Apple is said to be developing a lighter version of the headset, potentially slated for release in 2027. It’s unclear whether this is the same more budget-friendly model—rumored to cost around $2,000—that has been in development for some time. However, those devices aren’t likely to launch before 2027.
