DDR5 RAM Prices Are Now Higher Than the Cost of a PlayStation 5

Prices for PC memory continue to surge, and the latest spikes are pushing high-capacity DDR5 kits well beyond $500. In some cases, buying 128GB of RAM now costs more than purchasing an entire desktop system.
DDR5 shortages have been building as AI data centers consume massive amounts of memory. As a result, PC enthusiasts have watched prices climb sharply over the past several days.
Compared with the start of the year, DDR5 modules are now selling for 120% to 200% more. A common 64GB kit—two 32GB sticks—has jumped from roughly $200 to well over $600 .
That means a set of RAM now costs more than a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive, which is going for around $499 during Black Friday sales.
Price-tracking charts also show consistent increases for both DDR4 and DDR5 products. Anyone needing 128GB of DDR5 should expect prices north of $1,000, more than double the typical $400 range—and even above the discounted PS5 Pro at $649.
The fluctuations have become so extreme that a Micro Center location in Texas reportedly removed all listed prices for DDR5 stock. The store instead posted a notice telling customers to ask an associate for current pricing.
Unsurprisingly, PC builders are frustrated. One user on X/Twitter complained that the “AI bubble” has already disrupted GPU availability and is now causing RAM prices to skyrocket. Some are also worried that SSDs may be the next part to be affected as AI-related demand grows.
