Stronger identity checks for sensitive apps
One of the most significant additions is a feature called Identity Check. Previously, someone who observed a user entering their PIN could potentially unlock the device and gain access to everything on it. With Identity Check enabled, high-risk apps - including banking services and password managers - can require biometric verification every time they are opened.
Even if an attacker knows the device PIN, access is blocked unless a fingerprint or facial scan is successfully authenticated. This adds an extra layer of protection around the most sensitive parts of the phone.
Smarter detection of suspicious access attempts
The update also introduces improved safeguards against repeated unlock attempts. Android 16 can now distinguish between innocent mistakes - such as a child entering the wrong passcode - and deliberate attempts to break into the device.
If the system detects patterns consistent with an attack, it responds more aggressively by limiting access sooner. At the same time, it avoids penalising the legitimate owner for occasional errors, striking a balance between security and usability.
Faster and more powerful remote protection
Google has also enhanced its Remote Lock functionality. Users can now secure their phone from another device using a custom security question known only to them, making it harder for anyone else to regain access.
In addition, Android’s theft detection has become more proactive. If the system senses a sudden “snatch-and-run” movement - such as someone grabbing the phone and fleeing - the screen locks automatically within seconds. This helps prevent immediate access to personal data even before the user realises the device is gone.
With these updates, Google is reinforcing the idea that losing a phone shouldn’t mean losing control over one’s digital life. Android 16 aims to ensure that even in the event of theft, personal privacy and financial security remain firmly protected.
