Apple admits that one of the new features of iOS 16 is causing Battery Drain
One of the most praised features of the new iOS 16 has received some criticism, because it is actually a real battery hog. And no, we are not the ones to say this, as this has been admitted by Apple itself, who wrote this in a recently published support document.
The feature, known as the “haptic keyboard”, is optional in iOS 16 and allows users to access physical feedback through slight vibrations whenever they touch a key, confirming that it has been pressed as the keyboard sounds. The feature is a useful addition to the iPhone, and if it’s criticized by some, it’s praised by many others, going so far as to claim that it’s one of the best new little features in iOS 16, especially since similar functionality has long been available on Android devices.
“Enabling the haptic keyboard will affect your iPhone battery life,” Apple states in this support document. The company didn’t provide additional details, so it’s unclear exactly how much battery time the feature consumes. Low Power Mode does not disable this haptic feedback, so the only option for users concerned about the potential impact on battery life is to keep the feature off.
Any hardware, or software, feature on an iPhone obviously consumes battery, but the fact that Apple thinks it’s worth explicitly mentioning haptic keyboard feedback could indicate that the additional battery life the feature uses is significant.
To enable this feature on your iPhone keyboard, you just need to open Settings, tap Sounds and ringtone → Keyboard feedback and enable ringtone.
It is available on iPhone 8 and newer versions with iOS 16.
