Apple is set to introduce live translation for AirPods with the upcoming iOS 19 update later this year.

According to Bloomberg, the feature will allow an iPhone to listen to a conversation in a different language and provide real-time translation through AirPods. When the user responds, their translated speech will be played aloud on the iPhone for the other person to hear.
While similar translation features have been available on rival earbuds for years, early tests with Google Pixel Buds showed that using the Google Translate app directly on a phone was often more effective. Apple already offers a built-in Translate app for iPhones, which may integrate with the new AirPods translation feature.
This update follows Apple’s continued efforts to enhance AirPods’ accessibility features. Last year, the AirPods Pro 2 received FDA clearance to function as hearing aids, though user feedback has been mixed. The Adaptive Transparency mode also helps protect hearing by automatically reducing the volume of loud noises.
Alongside this, iOS 19 is expected to bring a significant redesign—the most substantial since iOS 7 in 2013—including refreshed apps, menus, and windows. Apple is likely to reveal more details at WWDC 2025 in June.
Additionally, rumors suggest Apple is working on AirPods with built-in cameras designed to enhance spatial audio, particularly for use with the Vision Pro headset. A patent discovered last fall also hinted at the possibility of using AirPods to measure heart activity through their microphones.
