Apple Releases iOS 26: Biggest Update Since iOS 7

After debuting at WWDC and running through a developer preview and public beta over the summer, iOS 26 is now officially available for all supported iPhones.

Apple is calling this release its most ambitious iOS update since 2013’s iOS 7 redesign. The company is also changing how it names software: instead of version numbers, each release will now reflect its release year. The “26” branding reflects the fact that the update will be active primarily in 2026.

What’s New in iOS 26

Liquid Glass Interface

The standout feature is the “Liquid Glass” design language, inspired by visionOS. It introduces translucent layers across menus, a floating magnifier when swiping over items, and dynamic animations that expand or contract as you scroll. It adapts automatically between light and dark modes.

New Apps and Features

Games App: A central hub for all gaming-related tools and settings.
Messages: Smarter filtering, options to mute unknown senders, and the ability to create in-app polls.
Phone: A “Hold Assist” feature that waits on hold for you until a live agent picks up.

Alongside iOS 26, Apple is also rolling out iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.

Compatible iPhones

Not every iPhone can handle the new OS. Notably, the iPhone X has been dropped from support. Here’s the full list of models that can run iOS 26:

How to Install iOS 26

Before downloading, make sure your device has enough free space—Apple recommends up to 10GB (the update itself is around 5.97GB).

To install:

Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
Wait for iOS 26 to appear, then tap Download and Install.
If you’d rather not interrupt your day, you can choose Install Tonight, which will upgrade your iPhone while charging overnight.
