Apple unveils affordable Mac mini M2 and M2 Pro

Apple has just announced its new Mac mini that incorporates the M2 and M2 Pro chips, allowing it to have even more power than the model currently on the market… with the advantage of being even cheaper.

The Mac mini with M2 chip features an 8-core processor with four high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores, as well as a 10-core graphics chip (GPU). Common tasks like launching applications, multitasking or browsing the web are performed at high speed.

For users who perform more intensive tasks, the new Mac mini can also handle even more demanding workloads. With up to 24GB of RAM and 100GB/s of bandwidth, activities like image editing in Adobe Photoshop are up to 50% faster than the previous generation model.

The M2 chip also powers the Mac mini with the ProRes Accelerator Card, which makes tasks like video editing in Final Cut Pro more than twice as fast. The new computer can also simultaneously play up to two streams of ProRes 422 8K video at 30 frames per second or up to 12 streams of ProRes 422 4K video at 30 frames per second. According to Apple these days, the new Mac mini is up to 5 times faster than the best-selling Windows desktop computer. The Windows 11 PC being compared is a model with an Intel Core i5 processor, Intel UHD Graphics 730 graphics chip, but no further details were revealed. State-of-the-art Neural Engine is 40% faster than the M1 chip to accelerate machine learning tasks such as video analysis and image processing.

Designed to dramatically increase video playback and encoding speeds while consuming little power, the M2 Pro chip features a powerful engine that accelerates popular video codecs and can simultaneously play up to five streams of ProRes 422 8K video at 30 frames per second, or up to 23 streams of ProRes 422 4K video at 30 frames per second. The model with the M2 Pro chip is up to 14 times faster than the fastest Mac mini with an Intel processor according to Apple.

Regarding the design, there are no particular changes compared to the M1 model. The new model with M2 chip has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports a maximum of two monitors. The model equipped with the M2 Pro chip includes four Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports up to three monitors. Furthermore, the M2 Pro model can support an 8K display, a first for Mac.

Both models have two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, a 1Gb/s Ethernet port with a 10Gb/s option, and an improved headphone jack to support high-impedance headphones. In terms of wireless connectivity, the two new models also incorporate the latest standards with Wi-Fi 6E offering speeds up to twice as fast as before, as well as Bluetooth 5.3.
