EssilorLuxottica and Meta Extend Partnership for Next-Generation Smart Glasses
EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban, has extended its partnership with Meta for another 10 years, continuing their collaboration on smart glasses development.
The initial agreement between the two companies was made in 2019, resulting in Meta releasing two generations of Ray-Ban-branded smart glasses. Under the renewed deal, they plan to create “multi-generational smart eyewear products” over the next decade, according to a statement from EssilorLuxottica.
Francesco Milleri, Chairman and CEO of EssilorLuxottica, commented on the partnership: “The work we’ve done with Meta so far, while still in its early stages, marks a significant step in our goal to make glasses a gateway to the connected world. We’re excited to continue shaping the future of this category together.”
Ray-Ban’s Meta Glasses allow users to perform tasks like making calls, taking photos, recording videos, sharing media, identifying landmarks, and listening to music. In a review, the glasses were praised for their functionality, though they aren’t seen as a full replacement for smartphones or earbuds, positioning them more as a fun gadget for social media enthusiasts than a must-have device.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, saying, “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved with EssilorLuxottica so far, and excited for our future roadmap. Together, we can turn glasses into a major technology platform while making them stylish.”
The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform. Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, recently revealed that the company is also collaborating with Google and Samsung on a new pair of smart glasses.
