Files by Google on Android Introduces Improved Recents Carousel

A notable update to Files by Google on Android changes how the “Recents” carousel at the top of the app functions. Previously, the Recents section displayed folders such as Camera, Screenshots, Download (Images), and Download (Documents) in a 2×2 grid format, offering a small square preview. Tapping on a folder opened it in grid view.
With the latest beta version, Files by Google is transitioning to a carousel of rectangular cards that provide a dedicated preview for each item, including images and documents.
In the new design, the file name (with extension) and folder name are displayed at the bottom of each card. The three-dot overflow menu allows for quick actions like Share, Move to trash, and Add to Starred, which is a significant enhancement. Tapping on a card opens the file in fullscreen mode.
The carousel displays 10 items, with a “See all” option in the top-right corner that leads to a new “Recents” tab view for your various folders.
This update, similar to the carousel in Google Photos for Memories, speeds up access to files by eliminating the need to navigate through folders. The updated Recents carousel is available in version 1.4374.x of Files by Google, which is the latest beta release. After updating, it takes a moment for the new view to populate.
