Gardner’s 8 Intelligences Theory to Detect Your Talent
The American psychologist Howard Gardner, professor at Harvard University and Prince of Asturias Award in 2011, presented in 1983 the Theory of the seven multiple intelligences, based on learning processes and the functioning of the human brain focused on the field of education. In 1995 he added an eighth intelligence.
Following the Wikipedia definition, intelligence is the ability to perceive or infer information and retain it as knowledge to apply it to a behavior and adapt it to an environment or context. However, for Howard, intelligence is a network of interrelated autonomous sets and not a set of specific capabilities. The “mix” of the capabilities of all of them helps us in our progress. But often we don’t know which skills we’re best at and which ones we’re best at spotting talent and getting the job done.
The objective is to know oneself and to know in which of the eight existing intelligences we have the most potential to provide a unique and differential added value. The new paradigm leads us to share new values and that the person and human interconnections are the most important thing in a professional relationship.
The Capabilities Of The Eight Intelligences are given as below
- Intrapersonal or individual
Ability to know and understand oneself. If we know our strengths and weaknesses as people, we will reflect, evaluate, think, plan and act better. People with high intrapersonal intelligence usually imagine and dream about their personal and professional goals more than others.
- Interpersonal or social
It is the ability to meet, interact and understand others. If we know how to observe and listen to the people around us, we will be able to empathize and relate to each other and it will help us in our personal and professional relationships. It is also the ability to communicate, empathize and interact, which allows us to identify the mood and feelings of others. Normally people with high interpersonal intelligence always show the desire to help others.
- Linguistic or verbal
Ability for oral and written language. If we know how to communicate and speak, we will be able to respond using the correct words at all times. The ability to think fast, narrate, read and memorize will lead us to better improvisation and confidence in conversations. People with high linguistic or verbal intelligence are usually able to give words sound and rhythm, and show great communication skills and rhetorical and poetic expression.
- Logical- mathematical
It is a special ability to reason and analyze. If we know how to solve mathematical problems, we will be able to analyze, reason, experiment and solve problems with numbers, thinking about the rules of logic. Numbers people observe, process, understand, propose and solve much faster than the rest, thus providing a differential point of view.
- Bodily or kinesthetic
It is the ability and domain of body expression. If we know how to stage, coordinate and express ourselves with the body, we will be able to express physical abilities such as balance, flexibility, dance and speed. People who develop physical coordination, with the help of mental coordination, achieve physical coordination and improvement for cognitive development, such as theater or sports.
- Musical or rhythmic
Special ability for music. If we know how to listen, whistle, hum and sing, we will be able to communicate and express ourselves much better. Perceiving the three pillars that make up music, rhythm, pitch, and timbre will help us gain the ability to express ourselves musically through melodies, composing, or Appreciate any sound. People with this high intelligence have an easier time learning, expressing feelings and emotions through music and perceive musical forms by recognizing rhythmic patterns.
- Spatial or visual
If we know how to distinguish shapes and objects from different angles, we will tend to think in images or photographs and perceive the world by visualizing, imagining and creating mental images, designing, ordering, organizing and drawing from the visual experience to transform it. Normally people with this high intelligence have the ability to process information from two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces.
- Naturist
It is the ability to understand the natural world. If we know how to perceive the objects, animals and plants that make up nature and study their relevant relationships, we will be able to observe, identify, perceive, capture, classify and order. Individuals who possess the ability to experience the natural world have a knack for scientific thought and feelings towards species of flora and fauna.
Twelve years after presenting the seven multiple intelligences, Howard Gardner presented naturist intelligence, because he thought that it deserved an independent intelligence, since the subsets and various cognitive aspects of naturist intelligence were different from the rest, although they had been included since 1983 in the mathematical and spatial intelligences.
So carry out a personal self-check, to determine in which of the eight intelligences you stand out the most and thus may or may not (because you already know it) that you discover your talent and you can enhance your skills and abilities in your day to day life.
