Helping to share the web since 1996

Google Chrome 109 is now available for download

With Chrome 109, Google is proposing a new web standard to make it easier for credit cards, banks and other payment providers to authenticate in your browser. It’s called Secure Payment Confirmation (SPC) and it allows authentication with the biometric unlocking method. If supported by the bank or payment provider, you can skip the typical annoying confirmation dialogs and simply scan your fingerprint. This is more secure than entering details that can be found on your credit card or bank account.

Further the New “Conditional focus” feature, which allows web applications to control whether the captured tab or window will be focused when the capture is started or whether the capture page should remain in focus. You’re also getting the ability to mute local audio playback, which should help when performing in a room with other people.

Google’s Material You theme has been present in Chrome for Android for some time, but now it’s also coming to Windows and macOS. This allows you to change Chrome’s theme simply by changing the background image on the New Tab page. To enable this feature, enable the flag at chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-color-extraction. As of this writing, the flag is present in Chrome 109.

Finally, but not least, Google had already announced that support for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 would be dropped in Chrome 110. This means that Chrome 109 is the last version backwards compatible with Windows 10. Chrome 110 release is scheduled for February 7, 2023 and that version will no longer be compatible with Windows 7/8/8.1, so this is the final version for those operating systems.
