Google I/O 2025: Schedule, Highlights, and How to Watch

Google is back this month with its annual I/O developer event, and 2025’s edition is taking a slightly different approach with a two-part format.
Kicking Off With Android
The festivities begin on May 13 with a virtual Android-focused event—an unusual move, since Android updates are typically part of the main I/O presentation. Dubbed The Android Show: I/O Edition, the livestream starts at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. This separate spotlight hints that Google may be setting the stage for Android news to clear the way for a more AI-centered main keynote later on.
The Main Event: May 20
Google I/O officially unfolds on May 20 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The day begins with a keynote at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, followed by a developer-focused session at 1 p.m. PT / 4 p.m. ET. Viewers can tune in live for updates on Google’s newest innovations across AI, Android, and other platforms. Registration and more details are available at io.google/2025.
Android 16: An Early Reveal?
Google hasn’t revealed much about the May 13 Android session, but it’s expected to provide a deeper look at Android 16, which has already gone through several preview and beta stages. With its accelerated release strategy, Google seems to be aligning Android 16’s launch with upcoming hardware.
So far, test versions have hinted at several new features: lock-screen widgets, AI-generated notification summaries, improved health data management, stronger security controls, and accessibility enhancements such as high-contrast text outlines. A new desktop mode for Pixel devices is also being tested, which could challenge Samsung’s DeX by turning phones into productivity hubs.
A detailed walkthrough of Android 16 is slated for May 20 at 3:30 p.m. PT.
Is Google Reentering the Smart Glasses Arena?
While Google halted Project Iris in 2023, its interest in wearable tech hasn’t vanished. In December, it revealed a new operating system for smart glasses and VR, which appeared on Samsung’s Project Moohan headset at MWC. Last year’s I/O demo of Project Astra—a voice-driven AI assistant—was shown on an unknown AR glasses prototype.
Astra’s technology has since been integrated into Gemini Live, which gives it access to a smartphone’s camera. Whether this functionality will appear in new wearable hardware remains to be seen.
AI to Take Center Stage
As AI competition heats up, expect Google’s Gemini platform to dominate the keynote. A preview version of Gemini 2.5 Pro is already live, with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis set to present at 3:30 p.m. ET on May 20. Google is also working on a more interactive AI search experience—an evolution of the AI Overviews introduced in 2023—that could be previewed during the keynote.
Additionally, Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov will speak on the role of AI in autonomous vehicles, underscoring Alphabet’s broader AI ambitions.
