Google officially delays Manifest v2 Chrome Extensions

Google announced a moment ago that it had to review its plans to drop support for the old Manifest v2 extensions of Google Chrome, which was originally planned to happen in 2023, but has now been officially delayed.
For the second time in the space of a few days, therefore, we are talking about the most used web browser on the entire web. While last time it was about an evolution of Google Chrome, now we see that the company will continue to use the current technology for some time to come.
Last year, when the search giant announced its plans to support Google Chrome’s Manifest v2 extensions, it said it would be the last update to those plans, and that it wouldn’t have major repercussions for users. Yeah, and here we are talking about something that Google said wouldn’t happen, with a new episode of this less than exciting soap opera.
The original plan foresaw the involvement of Chrome Beta, Dev and Canary, with an experience that consisted precisely in the elimination of support for extensions Manifest v2. Additionally, Manifest v3 extensions would be required to display an ID badge in the Chrome Web Store.
After analyzing community comments on the matter, Google identified a number of possible common challenges to be overcome, arriving at this decision to postpone its implementation. The postponement on the subject was communicated directly to the community of programmers, clearly very interested in this subject: Google promised them the maximum effort in the search for solutions that would help them in the migration with the new functions, bug fixes and adequate adoption times.
With the first stage scheduled for January 2023 and now postponed, the research giant is evaluating how to update the other stages of the process of definitively overcoming the old extensions. The new program will be announced next year in March. With Manifest v3, greater attention to privacy is promised, although ad blockers can take their toll.
