Google to delete inactive Gmail accounts
If you have several very old and/or inactive Gmail accounts, the time has come to start a password recovery to log in to those accounts… the goal? Don’t ever lose them.
Google is warning its users that from next December, old accounts that have not had any activity for several months are at risk of being deleted. These are not just Gmail accounts, but Google accounts in general. The good news is that this only applies to very old accounts, and relatively newer accounts will not be affected, especially those that have been untouched for over 2 years. To keep your old account, just log in to read or send an email, connect to Google Drive, watch a YouTube video while logged in to the account, or simply download an app from the Play Store, from that account.
To avoid problem, Google has been keen to send several warnings to its users, including secondary accounts communicated for access recovery. In a first phase, the deletion wave will focus on very specific accounts, namely those created and never used.
Google will clean up Gmail accounts
As for the reason for these exclusions, Google mentions a security boost, as these old accounts are more likely to end up in pirated databases and, moreover, often do not benefit from two-step validation.
