iOS 16 update causes issues in HDMI functionality

With the arrival of iOS 16, it is natural that some bugs have arrived, and users often report them, which are later resolved by Apple. Recently, a new bug was discovered that prevented DRM-restricted content from playing with AirPlay on older Apple TV models. It now appears that the problem is more widespread than initially estimated and also involves playback attempts made using HDMI adapters.
According to a discussion on Apple’s support forum, users using iPhones and iPads updated to the latest version of the operating system are unable to play content from major streaming services using an HDMI adapter; specifically, the adapters are still able to mirror the source device’s display, but the screen goes black when trying to play DRM-restricted content.
DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a technology whose purpose is to prevent digital content from being copied and distributed without permission. So it looks like iOS 16 has an updated version of DRM that is incompatible with older devices.
A Reddit user said that he contacted Netflix support because of this problem, and the company’s service would have confirmed that it has adopted a new policy according to which it is impossible to carry out these operations using an HDMI adapter with a device updated to iOS 16 .
In any case, the problem is not limited to Netflix alone, but is present on all platforms that offer streaming content; therefore, it may be related to the problem mentioned at the beginning about Air Play and iOS 16, since with previous versions of the system everything seems to work normally.
iOS 16 having problems mirroring streaming with HDMI adapters
At the moment the issue is unclear and it is not known whether or not a solution will be provided by Apple. In any case, it should be emphasized that owners of USB-C iPads can still mirror DRM-restricted content, at least for now.
