Windows 11’s built-in file support has received new features to offer users more flexibility and customization when working with ZIP, 7zip and TAR files without relying on third-party applications.

The latest version of Canary Channel’s Windows 11 preview features a new compression wizard where you can select format, compression level, compression algorithms, and some extra features.

Microsoft released support for 7zip, TAR, RAR, 7Z, and other file formats for Windows 11 last year. However, the ability to compress files has remained unchanged, leaving users with just one option. With build 26040 of Windows 11, Microsoft changes this situation.

Customers with the latest version of Canary Channel can right-click a file or cluster of files, and select Zip to > Additional options. This will open a new wizard, where users can choose the following options:

  • File format: 7zip, TAR and ZIP (RAR is not available).
  • Compression method: Store, Deflate, BZip2, LZMA1, LZMA2, PPMd. The available options depend on the selected file format.
  • Compression level: from 0 to 9.
  • Additional options for retaining symbolic links and hard links.

Unlike some other changes in build 26040, new compression features are available to all Canary users and do not require the activation of any hidden features or IDs. Unfortunately, users are still unable to protect compressed files with passwords or open protected files.

It will be interesting to see how the new file options compare to those of third-party applications.
