Microsoft responds to FTC over concerns over Activision Blizzard acquisition

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is prosecuting Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Of course, the Redmond company didn’t like this move, especially as there have been subtle, but positive, signs from the UK recently. Microsoft now comments on the lawsuit in a statement and presents its own arguments for the acquisition.
Basically, Microsoft uses the same tactics as Sony: the latter presented itself as an excessively fragile company whose PlayStation brand would be almost over if “Call of Duty” was not available on its consoles. Obviously that’s a huge stretch, as exclusive brands like God of War, The Last of Us, Spider-Man and more are supposed to ensure that loyal PlayStation customers stay loyal to Sony.
Microsoft is now playing the same game and uses some graphics to demonstrate it. In those graphs (which you can see below), reference is made to Sony’s and Nintendo’s superior market shares in the console market and their number of exclusive titles. It also shows that the smartphone gaming segment is currently in a losing position.
Of course, it’s kind of fun in the end, because usually companies like Microsoft and Nintendo like to brag about their status and all sorts of achievements. Now people try to present themselves as small and insignificant as possible. Incidentally, Microsoft has already signed an agreement with Nintendo that guarantees ports of the “Call of Duty” series for 10 years, and would also like to do something similar with Sony.
The Redmond-based company insists that acquiring Activision Blizzard will be good for gamers and the industry as a whole, as it will allow Microsoft to better compete with market leaders Sony and Nintendo. Competition watchdogs in some regions, including the EU, are currently scrutinizing the potential acquisition more closely.
