Microsoft to Phase Out Autofill Feature in Authenticator App by August 2025

If you’re relying on Microsoft Authenticator to store and autofill your passwords, it’s time to consider alternatives. Microsoft has announced that its autofill functionality in the Authenticator app will be discontinued by August 2025, with users encouraged to switch to the Edge browser for managing saved credentials.

According to an official Microsoft blog update, the company is making changes to streamline its autofill services across platforms. The goal is to centralize password management within Microsoft Edge, allowing users to access saved details on multiple devices.

The retirement of Authenticator’s autofill feature will occur in three key stages:

June 2025: You will no longer be able to save new passwords in the Authenticator app.
July 2025: Autofill support will be completely disabled. Additionally, any stored payment information will be erased.
August 2025: Existing saved passwords will no longer be accessible within the Authenticator app.

Passwords and contact information previously stored in Authenticator are synced with your Microsoft account and can be retrieved via the Edge browser. To continue using autofill on your mobile device, you’ll need to download Edge and designate it as your default autofill tool.

To switch autofill providers before the deadline, export your Authenticator passwords by going to Settings > Autofill > Export Passwords within the app. You can then import your data into another service like Google Password Manager or iCloud Keychain.

These changes won’t affect Authenticator’s core functionality. You can still use it for two-factor authentication (2FA) and passkey access. Microsoft is also moving toward a passwordless future, with passkeys becoming the default login method for new accounts.
