Revolutionizing Online Search: The Impending Shift in How We Search for Information

The companies behind the two biggest US search engines, Bing and Google, have revealed they are developing new search capabilities using conversational artificial intelligence (AI) to generate complex responses to user queries. Microsoft announced its revamped Bing search engine will also chat with users and create content in response to user questions. Meanwhile, Google unveiled its AI tool, Bard, which will enable Google to offer more complex responses to queries. The announcements reflect the growing interest in AI chatbot tools following the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

However, large language models, such as ChatGPT, can be unreliable, spreading misinformation, making up responses and presenting sexist and racist biases. Experts warn that the new AI tools may also face a challenge in terms of trust, with the onus on users to fact-check responses. Despite this, there is likely to be strong interest in the new search capabilities. ChatGPT attracted a million users in its first five days, and is estimated to have hit 100 million users since. While consumers may enjoy exploring the new Bing and Bard interfaces, the trust factor is likely to determine whether that interest will be sustained.

The race is now on for tech giants to deploy similar tools that could transform the way we draft emails, write essays, and handle other tasks. There is much excitement over the potential of AI-powered search engines, though concerns remain about their trustworthiness.
