Russia bans Facebook: Accused of Discrimination
Amidst the Russia-Ukraine war, the Russian President has taken a big action against Facebook and Twitter. Russia banned Facebook. META has already taken action against Russia. Russia’s censorship agency Roskomnadzor has accused Facebook of discriminating against Russian media. Recently Facebook closed the pages of Russia’s RT and RIA news agency. According to the report of The Kyiv Independent, the Russian government’s censorship agency has announced a ban on Facebook.
Facebook accuses Russia
Facebook has accused Russia of denying credible information to millions of people. After banning Facebook, Russia has also taken action on Twitter. Access to Twitter has been banned in Russia. A bill has been signed for this. Under this law, a person can be jailed for up to 15 years for spreading ‘false’ information about the country’s armed forces.
Blocked many Media Outlets
The BBC, the US government’s Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle and the Latvian-based website Meduza were also blocked on Friday, along with a crackdown on social media. The government’s massive crackdown on foreign outlets that publish news in Russian has made Putin’s stand clear. Russia has consistently accused domestic audiences of being misinformed about the invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s Parliament made Strict Laws
It is worth noting that the Parliament of Russia on Friday announced a strict law regarding fake news. Parliament alleges that fake news is being run against the Russian army during the war. In this new law passed in Parliament, a provision of imprisonment up to 15 years has been made for deliberately spreading fake news against the army.
