Sony SRS-XV800 Review: Powerful, transportable sound

Presenting the Sony SRS-XV800, an extraordinary product unveiled in May. This “portable” speaker boasts remarkable sound quality, making it an ideal companion for all your outdoor events.
One of the standout features of this speaker is its clever design, catering to ease of transport. With two sturdy handles positioned at the top and a pair of wheels at the bottom, carrying the SRS-XV800 becomes a breeze, despite its dimensions and weight. Sony’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in the solid and elegant construction, showcasing the brand’s commitment to top-notch design.
Whether you’re hosting a party in the park or enjoying a day at the beach, the Sony SRS-XV800 promises to deliver a spectacular audio experience, all while being effortlessly portable. With this speaker by your side, you can immerse yourself in rich, high-quality sound, making every outdoor gathering a memorable one.
One of the great advantages of this speaker is that it allows you to connect a guitar and a microphone to torment the whole neighborhood, or simply to liven up that private party. However, this speaker is not a good alternative to a guitar amp, as it cannot do much with the guitar’s sound, although it works as promised. You can get a slight echo effect, but it’s far from what a dedicated amplifier is capable of.
And as a party requires lighting to match, the Sony SRS-XV800 has built-in flashing LEDs, although quite discreet. We’ve tested speakers here that shine brighter than a Christmas tree, but that’s not the case here. Using the Sony Music Center and Fiestable applications, you can easily define the desired visual effects, which even allow you to work with a rudimentary equalizer.
Ir allows you to easily pair it with any smartphone through its Bluetooth 5.2 and supports AAC and LDAC codecs, in addition to the usual SBC. You can also stream music via Chromecast, play via a USB stick, connect it to a TV using the supplied optical cable or even connect to an analogue source using a 3.5 mm auxiliary cable. All connections, and volume controls for the guitar/microphone, are located in a slot on the back of the speaker (see below), labeled in black text on a black background. If the room is completely dark, you won’t be able to see what’s on, or where it’s going to turn on.
Sony SRS-XV800 has a really powerful sound. But does it sound good? Well, at a lower volume, or medium, the sound is really good, but when we increase the volume (from 60~70%) despite it sounding loud, it has an incredible pressure that comes from the bass register. Whether this is good or bad always depends on one’s taste. If you’re a bass fan then you’ll be happy, if you’re more of a purist and like a more balanced sound then you won’t. However, I must admit that this situation is particularly good for outdoor parties, where the sound can spread out more. And as you can imagine, if it is to be used indoors, there are more suitable systems.
If you are one of those people who have outdoor parties, then this Sony SRS-XV800 is definitely the speaker for you, as it withstands even torrential rain, as it has IPX4 certification. However, this certification is only valid when the column is vertical, when used horizontally, its rating is IPX2.
We are talking about a product with an included battery, that is, it does not need to be systematically connected to the electrical current. Despite allowing you to use it connected to an electrical outlet, the Sony SRS-XV800 has an internal battery with 10520mAh that promises to play music for 25 hours. Obviously these 25 hours are considered with a moderate volume. In my tests, it lasted just over 8 hours with the volume at 60%, which I confess surprised me, since 60% is really a very high volume.
When you need to charge the battery, you just need to plug it into the socket with its power cable, which is included in the package. Since it has fast charging, 10 minutes of charge is enough for 3 hours of music playback.
This Sony SRS-XV800 is a robust speaker that is sure to fill your garden with joy. If you are thinking of having a pool party, this is exactly what you need. Bear in mind that it really does sound powerful, which is not necessarily synonymous with high fidelity.
In addition, its price is not at all friendly, we are talking about a cost price of around 700 euros… and for this amount, in my opinion, Sony would have to offer a little more. Still, our note for the Sony SRS-XV800 is:
