Technology: Its Responsibility for a Greener Future

The craze for faster, smarter and more innovative technologies has resulted in the launch of a new generation of iPhone every year; Smart watches and bracelets that track our state of health in real time; and through file sharing via cloud computing and video platforms that keep people working remotely connected and productive during a global pandemic.

The advancement of technology is also driven by the societal need to solve global problems, such as tackling climate change, developing sustainable energy solutions, supporting the adoption of electric vehicles and finding fuels cleaner to power public transport, buildings and our many devices.

Unfortunately, the technology is also being used as a weapon to target critical infrastructure with highly sophisticated cyberattacks; to create algorithms on social platforms with the intention of dividing us; and to threaten our democracy through the dissemination of disinformation, doctored images and hyper-faked videos. And let’s not even talk about Skynet and the Rise of the Machines, who will one day be the new rulers of the world.

So, whose responsibility is it when it comes to technology and the common good of society? Is it to inventors, researchers, investors? Or to us?

2021 has been a very lousy year in the world of technology. If you look at some of the big tech companies today, a lot of leaders in the industry don’t have the vision or the drive it takes to prioritize important things, like the weather. It’s not just profits that matter; we must turn to more laudable intentions.

In the past two decades alone, technology has evolved at an ever-increasing pace. Our ability to turn our wildest dreams into reality (just think of 3D printers) demonstrates that we have the resources to achieve technological advances like never before in human history. There are so many issues that need to be addressed in the world today. That is why technology needs to focus on the future and factor climate into the equation. This is the technology of the future that we need.

Each year in the technology sector, reports and lists are published to show the most compelling and advanced technologies of the previous 12 months. And the innovations in the energy sector or in society in general hwhich ave the most efficient effect on energy consumption is heat pumps.

Air-source heat pumps use a long-proven technology that involves absorbing heat from the outside air – even in cold weather – and transferring it inside the house to heat it. As the process can also be reversed to cool the interior of the house in summer, the use of an independent air conditioning unit is not necessary.

in the context of the climate future,  there is an urgency to talk about it more and to have access to more financial incentives to help us change our habits.
