Temu, Pinduoduo-linked online shopping platform, tops Amazon as most downloaded app in the US

Temu, an online shopping platform linked to China’s Pinduoduo, has quickly become the most downloaded app in the United States, surpassing Amazon and Walmart. Temu launched last year, and since its rollout in September, the application has been downloaded 24 million times, racking up more than 11 million monthly active users. In the fourth quarter of last year, US app installations for Temu exceeded those for Amazon, Walmart, and Target.
The 30-second commercial that Temu unveiled during the Super Bowl encouraged consumers to “shop like a billionaire” and highlighted the low prices of its products. Temu offers a wide range of affordable quality products for virtually everything, including home goods, apparel, and electronics. The company is eyeing new territory and announced on Twitter this month that it plans to expand to Canada. Temu’s success is due to its extremely low prices and in-app flash deals, such as 89% off certain items, which have been successful in acquiring new users.
However, some analysts have cautioned that it may be too early to tell whether Temu will be able to maintain those extremely low prices, free shipping, and other perks. Temu aims to continue to experiment in marketing and offerings, which is possible thanks to its resource-rich parent company, Pinduoduo.
