The Secret Ocean is hidden on This Moon of Saturn!
One of the moons of Saturn, the second largest planet in the Solar System, may have an ocean hidden. Astronomers claim that there is a layer of ice 32 km thick, under which this ocean can exist.
Mimas is one of the closest and largest moons to Saturn. Its diameter is 395 kilometers and this smallest celestial body is the most round because of its gravity.
According to experts, there is no indication of any liquid water on the Mimas moon from the images and observations, but simulations from the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado suggest that there may be an ocean hidden under its thick layer of ice.
In the year 2014, there were indications from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft that there would be some water under the surface of this moon. However, it has not been confirmed yet. In the new study, the team traced the size of the small moon and its structural features. This moon is also known as Saturn I, because it is closest to the rings of Saturn.
Ocean near Saturn’s moon
According to the report of New Scientist, lead author of this new study Alyssa Roden said that there is no evidence of any fracturing or melting on the upper surface of Mimas. When you look at Mimas, it looks like a small, cold, dead rock, but if you look at Mimas with a bunch of other icy moons, you can say that this moon has an ocean.
Mimas was discovered in 1789. It was discovered by astronomer William Herschel with his 40-foot reflecting telescope. NASA’s Cassini spacecraft first flew around this moon and also collected many pictures of this moon.
