Thunderbird : Mozilla’s Renowned Email Client Gets a Major Upgrade

Thunderbird is one of the most used email clients in the world, as it has the advantage of being free. However, those who use the software know that it has not received an interface update for some time. Hopefully that will change very soon, next summer to be exact. And who says it is Mozilla itself.

As of early 2020, Thunderbird development is handled by MZLA Technologies, which is a subsidiary of Mozilla. A small but growing number of paid programmers have been maintaining and updating the email client for the last three years. User donations helped keep the lights on. Now it looks like the team is ready to take a big leap forward in the development of the tool.

One of the team’s big goals is to update the email client’s interface so that it looks as good as modern email software. The blog post states:

A modern looking user interface is being implemented initially with version 115 coming in July, with the aim of offering a simple and clean interface for “new” users, as well as implementing more customizable options with a flexible and adaptable interface to allow veteran users to keep that familiarity they love.

Thunderbird prepares to gain a new interface

The team has a roadmap in place that will include UI and UX improvements over the next two years. In addition, efforts are being made to replace the old code in Thunderbird, along with better accessibility options and new features for the client “that some of their competitors have had for years. In addition, the team is aiming to release new versions monthly during the next three years.
