Windows 11’s market share is still behind Windows 10

According to the latest monthly survey by Steam, Valve’s gaming platform, Windows 11 on player computers is present in 28.42% of configurations, with an increase of 0.44% in a month. At the same time, Windows 10 saw a drop of 0.18% to 65.42%. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 currently account for 1.77% and 0.41%, respectively. Knowing that support for these two old Microsoft operating systems will end next week.
For professionals still using Windows 7, paid support through the Extended Security Update (ESU) program is coming to an end. As for Windows 8.1, tomorrow, January 10th will mark the end of support, with no possibility of extension with ESUs.
With the Steam platform, Windows accounts for 96.15% of devices, 2.48% for macOS and 1.38% for Linux. However, it should be noted that participation in the survey is optional and therefore does not involve all users of this platform.
For measuring Windows 11 progress, StatCounter numbers also have limitations. They are based on over 5 billion pageviews per month by Internet users worldwide, and over 1.5 million websites.
It seems that Windows 11’s market share on computers equipped with Microsoft’s operating system is 16.93%. That is, there was no real boost with the availability of the 22H2 version of Windows 11, but it remains to be seen whether an eventual renewal of computers will have had a more tangible influence. On Windows PCs, Windows 11’s market share is well behind Windows 10 at 68%. Windows 7’s market share remains surprisingly high at 11.18%, while Windows 8.1 counts at 2.6%.
The market share of the Windows operating system on desktop computers is 75.41%, 14.64% for macOS and 2.92% for Linux.
