Purification of air and surfaces generally require high-intensity UV light. This usually means that UVC lamps are placed close to the surface and require to be protected from contamination or purified. The effectiveness of purifying the surface is largely dependent on the roughness of the surface of the object to be cleaned since UV light is able to only kill the micro-organisms it strikes with enough force. As an example, water's transparency to 275 nanometers can differ by 10 times or more, depending on location. Industrial pollution requires a much more uvc exposure.
