Can Human Organs Grow on their Own?

Can human organs grow on their own like animals? The answer to this question has been sought for centuries. Now scientists have told the exact thing about this by doing an

Taking inspiration from te natural ability of some organisms like lizards and starfish to regenerate organs, scientists are working on how this can be implemented in the lab. If this happens then millions of people who have lost their limbs can be helped.

Attempts to regrow human organs

According to a  research, although there have been advances in technology like prosthetics, doctors are investigating different ways to regenerate human organs. In a new study published in the journal Science Advances, a group of scientists reported that they could be re-grown with legs in adult frogs.

Regenerated a frog’s severed leg

US-based scientist Michael Levine and his colleagues say they have seen a severed leg re-grow in a type of African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). He describes the process as a “step closer to the goal of regenerative medicine”.

After 18 months, the limb started to move again

Part of this study revealed how the leg of a Xenopus frog was developed. During the process, the scientists used a combination of a five-drug cocktail and a silicone wearable bioreactor called the ‘Biodome’ to gain control over the local microenvironment. The scientists revealed that the cocktail was only incubated for 24 hours. After 18 months, now this organ has started moving almost completely again.

This research is very impressive and exciting

James Monaghan, an associate professor in the Department of Biology at Northeastern University who was not involved in the research, called the results impressive and exciting.
