World’s First Drug Releasing Contact Lens: Now instead of eye drops, contact lenses will provide medicine in the eye
Eye allergies are quite common during the summer season. To avoid this, America’s pharma company Johnson & Johnson has created a new type of contact lens. This is the world’s first drug releasing contact lens. That is, allergy medicine can be inserted directly into the eye through this lens. It has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
New contact lens will help in cataract
Scientists have been trying to treat diseases like cataracts and glaucoma with the help of contact lenses for many years.
At present, eye drops are used to remove diseases related to the eyes. Although doctors say that many patients forget to use them. Also, the medicine does not reach the eyes properly through drops. About 95% of the drug is drained down the eye instead of going into the eye.
To deal with this problem, scientists have been trying for many years to treat diseases like cataract and glaucoma with the help of contact lenses. In the third phase of the research, people got relief from itching in the eyes only 3 minutes after applying contact lenses. Its effect also remained for 12 hours. The research results were published in Cornea Magazine in 2019.
Drug releasing contact lens made like this
These contact lenses are not only more comfortable, but they can also deliver more medicine to the eye than eye drops. These soft, flexible contact lenses are made of a water-absorbing plastic called a hydrogel. Their composition depends on which drug they are made to release.
No need for medication after lens insertion
These lenses will soon be made available to contact lens wearers in the US. It is already available in Canada and Japan.
Brian Paul, director of Johnson & Johnson, told that if the medicine and the lens work properly, once it is applied to the eye, the medicine is not needed. However, on the other hand, Pal says that the drug release from contact lenses can give relief only for a few hours.
New contact lens coming soon in America
Paul told that his company will make these lenses available in America as soon as possible. It is already available in Canada and Japan. This contact lens is not the right solution for people suffering from eye disease. With age, the problems related to eyes increase. They also have to take care of contact lenses along with eye drops on time to take care of their eyes.
