Energy-Saving Tips for Summer Season
The winter was long. Shorter days, snow storms, cold spells and lots of freezing rain. Fortunately, better weather is on the horizon. Please let spring be here soon! It’s also the time of year when we lose an hour of sleep, but it’s worth it. With the arrival of daylight saving time, its time to do some energy-saving measures to apply at home. As soon as the good weather sets in, we all want to open the windows wide to let in the fresh air, get out the cleaning products and put away the winter coats.
Get caught up in spring fever and add a few profitable energy-saving tasks to your list:
During your spring cleaning, be sure to clean the dryer vent, fridge coils and baseboard heaters. The dust that accumulates there can impair the functioning of these devices by causing them to “work” harder. A good blow of cloth and vacuum cleaner is enough to solve the problem.
Nothing tastes like summer more than a good barbecue. So don’t forget to add your barbecue to your cleaning list. Clean it thoroughly and, if it is a propane barbecue, inspect the fittings and hoses; if they are cracked or punctured, change them. Finally, fill your tank. You will soon be able to indulge in the pleasures of outdoor cooking.
Start venting the right way
If you have ceiling fans at home, now is the time to reverse the direction of operation. In the summer, the rotation should be counter-clockwise to pull hot air up and push cool air down, creating a cool breeze effect. Also, remember that fans are for cooling people, not just rooms. So turn them off before you go out.
Taking care of your furnace
Now is also the time to give your central heating appliance some love. Inspect the filters and clean or replace them. A clogged filter reduces the performance of the device and can even affect the quality of the air in the house. Since cleaning or replacing filters should be done regularly (every 90 days or so), make a note to remember to do it again in three months.
Eliminate drafts from windows and doors by locating and sealing leaks. Depending on where an air leak is located, there are different ways to seal it, including caulking and weatherstripping. If you have sliding doors, also make sure the track is clean. Indeed, the dust and dirt that accumulates in the rail system not only hinder the sliding of the door, but they can also affect its sealing.
Keep an eye open
As you move from room to room to advance the time on your clocks, take a moment to check light switches and outlets. Are they all working properly? Are there any burn marks or other signs of damage? Are the power outlets humming or making a strange sound? By identifying potential hazards, you can prevent an electrical fire. If you believe a proper inspection or repairs are needed, be sure to call a certified electrical contractor.
Get your laundry airy
If you have enough space indoors or outdoors, give your clothes dryer a break by installing a drying rack or clothesline. Not only will you save electricity costs, but your clothes will also gain in durability.
Buy a smart thermostat.
Looking for a quick and easy way to modernize? Buy a smart thermostat. With this device, you can program your heating and cooling preferences so you don’t have to worry about them (almost). If you already have a smart thermostat, consider making small adjustments as the season progresses. Likewise, if you use timers for your lighting, adjust them for the longest hours of sunlight.
That’s it, the big cleaning is over? It’s time to spoil yourself! Pour yourself a drink, settle into a good armchair and admire your work; you really deserve it.
Can’t wait for summer, we can’t wait to make the most of it!
