Disney+ to cut Original Productions in 2023

Disney+ is one of the most popular streaming platforms on the planet, with over 165 million subscribers. However, it is losing money for the parent company, which has decided to review its strategy after Bob Iger, the historic CEO who returned to the helm of the company last month to replace Bob Chapek.

Disney’s annual report suggests the company will ease up on its original productions. It is not a question of stopping them, but of reducing them. The streaming segment is thankless and difficult to make profitable: it would have caused the Californian company to lose more than a billion dollars in 2022, despite the constant increase in the number of subscribers.

All productions will be affected by this reduction. In 2023, the number of original productions will be reduced from 50 to 40 (films or series). This applies to exclusive Disney+ content as well as theatrically released content. While other branch of the company “General Entertainment”,  plans to increase its content from 145 to 240.

All of this doesn’t mean that the golden age of Disney+ is over, just that the number of productions will drop a little. If we take Marvel or Star Wars products as an example, we can expect a drop in the number of series in the future.
Why not offer more qualitative content? It’s no use releasing four series a year if half of them aren’t good. It remains to be seen how the two franchises will adapt to this change, as they already have a well-defined release schedule for the next three years.

Bob Iger appears to be taking matters into his own hands after Chapek’s departure and would like to move towards a more traditional, less Disney-centric business model.
