Microsoft announces major redesign for Skype

A few years ago, Microsoft made some profound changes to Skype, however, these changes were not very well received by users, as this attempt by Microsoft to modernize the messaging application “spoiled the user experience”. At the time, users spoke of a questionable interface and unnecessary resources that made the application much heavier. For this reason, Microsoft has rolled back this update to the previous version. Now, Microsoft appears to be ready to rejuvenate Skype once again.

The application now features a brand new interface with new illustrations, new emoticons, better performance and reliability improvements. Users will be entitled to the app’s iconic clouds from the “good old days”. Overall, Microsoft wants to keep its messaging app more familiar, up-to-date and modern, so that users aren’t shocked, or feel lost after installing the update.

The mobile app now features colorful and improved themes with more prominent and vibrant colors throughout the app, as well as improved accessibility. However, not everything is visual changes. Skype for iOS and Android got the same new calling experience added to desktops last year. Users can choose clear theme for calls, select backgrounds for non-video participants and enjoy better controls during video calls.

Microsoft also promises technical improvements that ensure that any video call works well and remains stable no matter how many people join (Skype supports up to 100 people per simultaneous call).

Finally, the redesigned Skype offers a new “Today” tab with personalized articles and news from “trusted sources around the world”. Users can read and share these stories freely and free of charge.
