Fear of Losing Subscribers Prompts Warner Bros. Discovery to Keep Discovery+ as Separate Platform

Contrary to its original plan of merging Discovery+ with HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to keep Discovery+ as a separate streaming platform in the United States, according to a source familiar with the matter. The media company had identified the combination of HBO Max and Discovery+ as a key synergy following its merger in April 2022, and it still plans to offer an “enhanced platform” later this year. However, the company is concerned that the move to combine the two services would lead to a significant loss of Discovery+ subscribers, as they may have to pay more for the combined app.

Discovery+ costs considerably less than HBO Max at $6.99 per month without ads and $4.99 per month with ads, compared to HBO Max’s $15.99 per month without ads and $9.99 per month with ads. While the two platforms have different content genres, they have a combined subscriber base of nearly 95 million globally.

Wall Street analysts are anticipating that more details about the combined platform will be revealed when Warner Bros. Discovery reports its earnings on February 23.
