Microsoft Edge encourages users not to download Google Chrome

Being the default browser in Windows 10 and 11 makes Microsoft Edge a good utility to offload Google Chrome or any other browser you prefer. But this movement seems to bother Microsoft as it constantly tries to find ways, sometimes aggressive, to encourage users to use Microsoft Edge.

An attempt to get Chrome using Edge Canary now results in the display of two banner advertisements in the browser: the first (tiny) that appears on the screen when entering the Chrome website, and the second, a huge banner that appears when downloading of Chrome starts.

Microsoft also plays with words to make users not download Chrome.  “Confidence” that your computer will connect to ad providers the moment you turn it on for the first time. The “confidence” that Microsoft Edge will shove more “recommended content” down your throat and impose Bing without a click. The “trust” that you can’t remove Edge from your computer and Microsoft’s list of ease of use goes on.

To be fair, Microsoft isn’t the only one practicing these questionable things to increase the user base. Google also shows banners promoting Chrome, but they only appear on the company’s website. Google is not injecting ads into the Firefox site, nor is it complaining every time you want to download another browser.

Microsoft goes out of their way to keep you on Microsoft Edge

Another thing of note is that I couldn’t see the large banner in the latest stable version of Edge, so the abomination could be a Microsoft thing to test with a limited set of Edge members or only in specific regions. Whatever happens in Microsoft’s software labs, there are no signs that the company is making its browser (a great browser) less annoying, which is extremely sad.
