Ferrari confirms Ransomware attack Resulted in Customer Personal Data Exposure

Ferrari, the Italian luxury car maker, confirmed it was hit by a ransomware attack that exposed customers’ personal information.. Ferrari CEO, Benedetto Vigna, sent a letter to affected customers informing them of the incident. The hackers were able to access a limited number of systems in the company’s IT environment, compromising customers’ names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers. However, the carmaker’s investigation so far indicates that no payment information or details of Ferrari cars owned or ordered were stolen. Ferrari has not disclosed the number of customers affected or how or when the company was compromised. It is also unclear if the breach is linked to a previous incident in October when a ransomware group known as “RansomEXX” claimed to have breached the carmaker, which Ferrari denied at the time.
Ferrari has stated that the breach did not impact its operational functions and that it has not paid the hackers’ ransom demand. The company has started an investigation with a third-party cybersecurity firm to identify the extent of the breach and strengthen its cybersecurity posture. Ferrari’s handling of the breach aligns with the guidance from cybersecurity experts, who recommend not paying ransom demands as it does not guarantee data recovery and can incentivize further attacks. The incident highlights the continued threat posed by ransomware attacks and the need for businesses to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their customers from cyber threats.
