Asus announces the new ROG Phone 8 at CES 2024

As expected, Asus used the stage at CES 2024, which opened its doors yesterday, to announce a new series of smartphones, the ROG Phone 8. And as you can see from the name, this is the new generation of smartphones for gaming, which is made up of the standard model and a Pro model. Let’s start by talking about its design, as this Asus ROG Phone 8 is the first device in the so-called #Gen3 that maintains the range’s distinctive features, but distorts it in many aspects.
The 2024 model is much easier to use from a handling point of view, thanks to its reduced size and weight, despite a screen of identical dimensions. And while we’re talking about the screen, it has a 6.78-inch LTPO OLED E6 panel with FullHD+ resolution, refresh rate of up to 165Hz (it’s adaptive from 1 to 120 Hz) and maximum brightness equal to 2500 nits. This screen occupies around 94% of the front of the equipment. On the back, the design of the photo compartment changes compared to its predecessor, but the Aura RGB Lightning logo remains. The triggers (pressure-sensitive areas) are still present to add control possibilities for players.
The ROG Phone 8 is also the first gaming smartphone to be IP68 certified. Inside we have Qualcomm’s current best chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which can count on a lot of energy to spare (and there is also X Mode that increases the CPU’s clock frequencies even further), also due to the features associated with artificial intelligence. , and in more than sufficient amounts of memory: there is 12, 16 or 24GB of RAM and 256, 512GB or 1TB of UFS 4.0 internal storage, but which is not expandable.
Despite being a gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone 8 has a respectable photographic sector with three sensors. The main one is the 50MP Sony IMX890, optically stabilized by the Hybrid Gimble Stabilizer 3.0 system that stabilizes the sensor in six axes. The other two sensors present are a 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 32MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
Thanks also to the implementation of algorithms based on artificial intelligence, ASUS has developed a device capable of shooting at 10x zoom without loss of quality (Hyper Clarity AI zoom) and reaching 30x zoom. There is also Super Night Mode, also enabled when shooting with the telephoto sensor. On the video recording front, the Super HyperSteady feature (improves image stabilization) is launched.
Artificial intelligence, however, is not limited to the photographic sector, but also joins the gamer soul of the ROG Phone 8: in fact, there are four AI features designed for gamers: Background Mode, X Capture, AI Grabber and X Sense .
Other AI features such as Semantic Search (between settings, in the launcher and in the Gallery application), AI Wallpaper (uses Stable Diffusion technology) and AI noise cancellation technology (two-way noise cancellation during communication, call or video call).
The presence of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 translates into a very respectable connectivity sector: support for 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 networks.
There is also NFC, GPS (dual band) and dual USB-C port (one at the bottom and one on the left side), a peculiar feature of the ROG Phone, with support for DisplayPort 1.4 and OTG standards. On the bottom edge we also find a 3.5 mm audio jack. The device’s internal battery is 5500mAh, the result of the combined work of two 2,750 mAh cells, a little less spacious than its predecessor, but, on paper, capable of providing similar results in terms of autonomy (a full day according to the company ).
There is also support for 65W fast wired charging (charger included) that allows a full charge in 39 minutes; There is also support for 15W wireless charging (Qi 1.3 standard). The last aspect to consider is the software: the ROG Phone 8 hits the market with Android 14, which is currently the latest available version of Google’s operating system.
Asus’ customizations, both through ROG UI and Zen UI, are not intrusive, but provide the user with an almost standard user experience. ROG Phone 8ROG Phone 8 Pro Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro with just a small difference In addition to the standard model, ASUS also offers its gaming smartphone in the Pro variant that differs from the standard only in the rear area. Instead of the backlit ROG logo, in fact, we find a programmable LED matrix made up of 341 Mini-LEDs that constitutes the so-called Anime Vision Mini-LED display: it still incorporates the brand’s logo, but allows users to better express their individuality and own creativity through predefined animations or those developed by the user themselves.
