Google announces the stable version of Android 13 TV

Google announced today that the stable version of Android 13 TV is now available, which means that the new version of the Android TV operating system is ready. Unsurprisingly, this new version comes with more improvements in performance and accessibility to help developers create compelling applications for the next generation of TVs.

As always with OS updates, it’s all about the APIs. These are usually for programmers to worry about, but they are also what bring new features to the end user. The ability to change the default resolution and refresh rate on HDMI-compatible devices, “for a more reliable playback experience.” Applications will be able to choose the ideal audio format without needing to start playback first. Different keyboard layouts will be better supported and will allow game developers to refer to keys by their physical location.

As for when your favorite Android TV device will receive the Android 13 TV update? This will depend on the OEM that manufactured your TV. If we had to guess, we’d expect the Chromecast with Google TV to get it sooner, and maybe the Nvidia Shield too.

Meanwhile, it is available on the ADT-3 test platform as well as the Android TV emulator. And programmers have also had months to test beta versions, which should help speed things up.
