iOS 15.7.2 released but only for iPhones that don’t support iOS 16
A day ago, Apple released iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and many other new versions of their operating systems for their devices. However, as part of this flurry of updates, Apple has also published new updates for iOS 15, and for iPadOS 15, which arrives with version 15.7.2. These updates bring most of the security patches that are present in iOS 16.2.
Both iOS 15.7 and 15.7.1 were released after iOS 16 became available and served two purposes: supporting newer devices whose owners didn’t want to migrate to the new version, and older devices that couldn’t. run the latest version.
However, this new iOS 15.7.2 only supports a very small number of devices. On Apple’s security updates page, we have the following information. Available for: iPhone 6s (all models), iPhone 7 (all models), iPhone SE (1st generation), iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later later and iPod touch (7th generation)
This means that iPad owners running iPadOS 15 can still download the update instead of iPadOS 16, but owners of newer iPhones will still have to move to iOS 16.2 to get all the latest security patches. The company did something similar last year and supported iOS 14 for a few months after iOS 15 was released, but ended up ending support for iOS 14. (iPhones and iPads may be treated differently this year because the first version of iPadOS 16 released to the public one month after the first release of iOS 16.)
Assuming Apple continues to roll out these iOS 15 updates for older devices, they’ll keep owners of older phones (mostly) safe for a while longer, even if they’re no longer compatible with newer versions of iOS. Apple previously supported older models like the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 that couldn’t be updated to iOS 13, releasing security updates for iOS 12 semi-regularly for nearly three years, even after the release of iOS 13.
As usual, Apple has not provided any hard end support date for iOS 15 or iPadOS 15.
