Microsoft will continue to release ‘Call of Duty’ on PlayStation
The American technology company affirms that it has reached an agreement for this with a Japanese brand. He also makes it clear that he hopes to “take similar steps” with Nintendo.
Call of Duty stays on PlayStation. Microsoft, a company that recently reached an agreement to purchase Activision Blizzard, has guaranteed that the titles of the popular war franchise will continue to be available on the competition’s console. There are no plans to make it exclusive to PC or Xbox.
“To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation during the term of any existing agreement with Activision. And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and in the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love,” Microsoft said in a statement. It also highlights its intention to “take similar steps to support Nintendo’s successful platform.”
When Microsoft announced the record agreement for the purchase of Activision, for which it will disburse more than 60,000 million euros, the company already dropped that it had no plans to convert, all at once, all the licenses it obtained into exclusives. According to information from Bloomberg, Microsoft initially committed to Sony to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for two more years. According to the company’s new statement, everything indicates that the permanence of the franchise on the competition’s consoles will extend beyond said limit.
The agreement with Sony is officially announced at a time when the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reviewing the deal reached by Microsoft for the purchase of Activision. It is worth remembering that the FTC has taken a hard line against Big Tech and is monitoring all deals that are made to combat monopoly.
Allowing Activision games to continue to be available on competing systems may be key to the purchase deal finally closing. Something that, according to Microsoft’s plans, should happen in 2023.
