Omicron: How The Threat Of Omicron Increased In The World, Scientists Told This Reason
Toronto: Regarding the new variant of Coronavirus, Omicron, scientists have said that the inequality in covid-19 vaccination allowed Omicron to arise. Canada Research Chair in Aging and Immunity, Don ME Bodish of McMaster University, and Chandrima Chakraborty, Professor of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University, say that the reason for Omicron’s rise is inequality in vaccination.
He said that the rate of covid-19 vaccination in Canada is 76 percent. This is ten times higher than the vaccination rate in the continent of Africa.
The process of virus growth and mutation accelerated
While people in prosperous Western countries have received multiple doses of vaccines, there are a large number of people in Africa and the Indian subcontinent who have not received a single dose. This has helped the virus to grow and speed up the process of mutation.
Whenever covid-19 gets a chance to stay for a while, it takes a new form and the infection starts increasing. Scientists say that this process will continue until resource-rich countries share vaccines with those who are not in a position to afford them.
Along with this, the scientists also said that it is more difficult than ever for Canada to strike a balance between vaccines available for domestic use and to encourage regional manufacturers to share them internationally.
Millions of pre-ordered vaccine doses
According to scientists, when the covid-19 crisis started, major manufacturers had already sold their vaccines to governments. This happened when the testing of vaccines had not even started and they were in the process of being made. It was kind of like raising money for my work.
Canada and other developed countries have ordered millions of doses, promising to share their spare vaccines with other countries, a number equal to the number of times their population has been vaccinated. It didn’t happen so quickly. Logistics, legal and other barriers hinder large-scale distribution of vaccines, but there is also a clear lack of will to overcome them.
Scientists say that it is very disappointing to see Omicron growing. From the very beginning of the infection, it was clear that the spread of covid-19 needs to be reduced worldwide, especially to prevent the emergence of new forms. This should have become clear with the introduction of the alpha form, it should have become more clear after the appearance of the delta form. If the cases of infection are high and the speed of vaccination is low, then forms like Delta and Omicron will increase.
