Streamlining Photo Sharing: Convert HEIC to JPEG on iPhone Using Shortcuts

High Efficiency Image Coding (HEIC), introduced with iOS 11 in 2017, offers superior image compression without sacrificing quality. This format allows users to store more photos on their devices, particularly beneficial for those with lower-capacity iPhones. However, HEIC’s limited compatibility across devices and applications necessitates converting photos to the more universally accepted JPG/JPEG format.

While third-party tools are available for this conversion, Apple’s Shortcuts app provides an efficient solution directly on your iPhone. To set up a shortcut for converting HEIC to JPEG:

  1. Install the Shortcuts App: If it’s not already on your iPhone, download it from the App Store.
  2. Create a New Shortcut: Open the Shortcuts app, tap the plus (+) button to start a new shortcut.
  3. Add Actions:
    • Select Photos: Search for and select the “Select Photos” action. Enable “Select Multiple” to convert multiple photos simultaneously.
    • Convert Image: Search for and select “Convert Image.” Ensure the conversion is set to JPEG.
    • Save to Photo Album: Search for and select “Save to Photo Album,” and choose the desired album for the converted photos.
  4. Name and Save the Shortcut: Long-press the created shortcut, select “Rename,” and enter a name like “Convert to JPEG.” Optionally, add the shortcut to your home screen for quick access.

To use the shortcut, open the Shortcuts app or tap the shortcut icon on your home screen, select the photos to convert, and the shortcut will save the JPEG images to your specified album.

For macOS users, photos can automatically convert to JPEG during transfer. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Photos and select the Automatic option under Transfer to Mac or PC.

With these steps, you can seamlessly share, edit, and view your photos across various platforms and devices.
