Anyone who has used, or uses, Telegram is certainly familiar with Telegram Chaneels, and that is precisely what WhatsApp seems to be “copying”. Initially, this feature was tipped to arrive with the name “Private Newsletter”, however, the name seems to have changed to suit the purpose of the feature.
Speaking of the feature itself, the Newsletter was designed to be a one-to-many form of messaging. With this, users can subscribe to accounts from which they would like to receive newsletters. The feature is still under development, but a screenshot, which we can see below, shows that WhatsApp has renamed it to Channels. The application will place the Channels in the Status tab, which will also be renamed from “Status” to “Update”.
The new Update tab will also be redesigned to have all statuses arranged in horizontal format instead of the vertical format we currently have. It is worth noting that user information such as contact numbers will remain hidden after joining a specific channel. With that, other channel members won’t be able to see you on the channel even if you have their contacts.
This new feature will also give you the power to control who you receive newsletters or broadcast messages from. You can also search for a channel name and join, as each channel will have a special identifier. Even though it is one of the main features of Telegram, having it on WhatsApp will be one of the best features that have been introduced on the platform.
